Solving Weak Internet and Slow Computer Issues
When Allison reached out to me, she was tired of her slow computer. Living in a 55-and-over senior living complex, she wasn’t sure where to begin. She explained her situation as best she could about what was and what was not working. After visiting her apartment, I confirmed that the weak internet signal was a significant part of the problem. She relied on the facility’s free Wi-Fi, but the signal in her apartment was frustratingly weak. Her apartment was situated between two devices in the outside hallway called repeaters. By the time the signal reached her iPhone and computer, it was too degraded to be useful. It just faded in and out.
A repeater is a device that helps extend the range of a wireless network. It does this by amplifying the signal it receives and then transmitting it further. This can be very useful in large buildings or areas where the Wi-Fi signal may not reach all spaces evenly. As apartments are insulated for noise reduction, it has to pass through added barriers.
To resolve this, I installed a Wi-Fi repeater of her own just inside her front door. This allowed the signal to remain strong and stable. Everywhere in her apartment was now reliable internet access.
Once her internet was fixed, the computer was running slowly, and like many people, Allison wasn’t sure why. I explained that startup programs, which are applications that automatically begin running when the computer is turned on, can often slow a machine down. I removed unnecessary ones that were eating up system resources. By the end of the visit, her computer was running noticeably faster, and her internet connection was no longer an issue.
A few days later, Allison sent me a text with an unrelated question. She needed help replacing her kitchen sink faucet and wondered if I knew anyone, and I told her I could handle it myself. On my next visit, I replaced the faucet, and giving her one less thing to worry about.

Not long after that, she reached out again. This time, she needed help connecting her older printer to both her iPhone and computer. Older printers can be challenging to set up with newer devices, but I assured her I would get it working. After some troubleshooting, I managed to connect everything. Her printer also needed new ink cartridges, so I made a quick trip to Staples to pick them up. By the end of my third visit, Allison’s printer was fully operational, and she was thrilled to have everything working smoothly.
